The Legal Information Access Program (LIAP) at the Women’s Resource Centerof Greensboro is designed to be a gateway to legal information that will help community women, ages 18 and older, to make well-informed decisions, based on a clear knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities, as they move through life transitions.
The Attorney Hotline
This program provides 15 minutes of free telephone consultation with an attorney, by appointment. There are currently 36 local attorneys who donate their time to consult with our clients. These attorneys represent 22 different areas of law including Civil, Corporate, Criminal, Domestic, Education, Employment, Environmental, Landlord/Tenant, Financial, Business/Bankruptcy, Immigration, Juvenile, Patent, Health, General Litigation, Business Start-Up, Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, Real Estate, Tax, Wills/Probate, and Worker’s Compensation.
Legal Workshops
These are scheduled from time to time as need is perceived and give participants the opportunity to get legal questions answered from qualified professional attorneys in a workshop setting, usually 90 minutes in length. A recent workshop was held on Separation and Divorce; one is up-coming on the law as it relates to Landlord/Tenant and Eviction issues.
Written Information
• NC Family Law: This is a comprehensive book published by the Women’s Center at Chapel Hill that covers all aspects of family law in a user-friendly, question/answer format. We make them available to community women at cost--$10/book. The book is available in both English and Spanish.
• For women who can not afford to purchas the NC Fmaily Law Book, we make available a list of websites where answers to the most frequently asked questions on issues related to separation/divorce, child support and child custody may be found.
• We make available on our information kiosk pamphlets published by NC Legal Aid on NC law as it relates to such topics as Eviction, Credit and Buying on Time, Lead Poisoning, and AIDS/HIV.
• We make available to Hispanic clients the Guia de Servicios Legales en Greensboro (Legal Resource Guide for Greensboro) developed by Abogados Y Amigos.
Computer Information
• Two computer stations, all online, are made available for community women to use any time the building is open. On the computers we provide access to the EZ Divorce software program and to internal sites from which women can obtain legal information.
